LEGO Lion Knights’ Castle 10305 vs The Goonies 21363: Which Display Showpiece for £300 to £440
The LEGO Icons Lion Knights’ Castle 10305 is a 4,514-piece foldout castle with 22 minifigures, retired 31 December 2025. The LEGO Ideas The Goonies 21363 is a 2,912-piece licensed display with 13 minifigures, released 1 November 2025 and still in production. One is a freshly retired Castle System flagship, now out of production and sought after for its build and minifigure depth. The other is a current Ideas release whose appeal sits in the licensed IP. We hold sealed verified copies of both at 10305 for £440 and 21363 for £322.99, factory-sealed and inspected in our Yorkshire warehouse before despatch.
This guide is for the UK collector with £300 to £440 to spend on a single retired-themed showpiece in 2026. We cover what each set actually delivers, the production-status difference that most reviewers gloss over, the foldout mechanism on the 10305 that needs explaining, and the cleanest way to buy a verified sealed copy of either.

LEGO Icons Lion Knights’ Castle 10305 at a glance
The 10305 is a deliberate callback to the 1984 Castle 6080 King’s Castle. Three LEGO designers worked on it (Carl Merriam, Mike Psiaki, Milan Madge), and the brief was to combine the four classic Castle factions in a single sealed box. The result is a foldout castle that holds Lion Knights, Black Falcons, Forestmen and Majisto’s wizard set together, with a baby dragon, multiple horses, a witch and named figures including King Mathias, Princess Storm, Tristan and Sir Richard.
The structure has hinges that let the two halves swing open into a flat courtyard layout, then close back into a closed-castle silhouette for shelf display. In closed mode it sits on a roughly 53 cm wide footprint. In open mode it needs around 80 cm. The foldable mechanism is the marketing headline.
The set retired at the end of December 2025. From January 2026 onwards, sealed copies are no longer being produced. That is the production-status fact that separates this set from a current production set on the same shelf.
LEGO Ideas The Goonies 21363 at a glance
The 21363 came out of LEGO Ideas as Set No. 71, based on a fan submission by Delusion Brick called "The Goonies (1985)". Three LEGO designers (Marina Stampoli, Markus Rollbühler, Tom Gerardin) worked the design up into a sectional pirate-ship-and-cave diorama with the entire Goonies film cast as minifigures.
The 13-figure roster is the set’s value proposition. Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen, Lotney "Sloth" Fratelli, Mikey Walsh, Brandon Walsh, Mouth Devereaux, Andrea Carmichael, Mama Fratelli, Francis Fratelli, Jake Fratelli, One-Eyed Willie and three further Goonies are all unique to this set. The pirate ship has a reveal mechanism that exposes the treasure-laden interior.
The set is current production. Released 1 November 2025, it is still being made at the time of writing in May 2026. Sealed copies on the UK market today are straightforwardly priced. That is a genuinely different buying scenario from the 10305.
How does the build experience compare?
These are not two builds in the same category. The 10305 is a Castle System flagship with stone-textured walls, modular hinge sections, a working drawbridge, towers with conical roofs, a courtyard with seating, and stables. It builds across two large instruction booklets and clusters around 12 to 16 hours total for an adult builder. The hinges are the engineering centrepiece.
The 21363 is an Ideas film-tribute diorama. It builds the pirate ship and the cave-and-rocks set behind it as a sectional layout, with each Goonies film callout (the skull medallion, the doubloon detail, the booby-trap mechanisms) appearing as printed elements rather than stickers. The build runs around 8 to 11 hours, less time-consuming than the Castle.
The 10305 is the more varied build. The 21363 is the more story-led build. Neither is harder than the other, they are just different shapes of project.
How do they display together?
They do not really share a shelf. The 10305 is a tall castle silhouette. The 21363 is a horizontal pirate-ship-and-cave diorama. The 10305 wants closed-castle vertical wall behind it. The 21363 wants long-shelf depth.
The 10305 in closed-castle mode sits on a roughly 53 cm wide footprint and is around 36 cm high to the top of the central tower. In open-foldout mode it needs 80 cm of clear desk or shelf space. Most owners pick one configuration and leave it because the hinge plates do not love repeat folding cycles.
The 21363 is wider than tall, with the ship section taking the dominant horizontal axis. It works best on a deeper shelf where you can see the ship and the cave from the front simultaneously. Mounting it on a wall does not work; this is a horizontal display piece.

Choose the 10305 if you want a freshly retired Castle System flagship with the deepest minifigure roster Castle has ever had, you have shelf space for a vertical castle silhouette, or scarcity matters to you in 2026. The 22-figure roster and the foldout mechanism are the value.
Choose the 21363 if you specifically love the Goonies film, you want a 13-figure film-tribute roster including Sloth and One-Eyed Willie, or you want a horizontal sectional diorama. The IP attachment is the value, not retirement scarcity.
If the budget allows both, they do not overlap. They occupy completely different shelves and address completely different collector identities.

Why does sealed matter for these two sets?
For the 10305, the 22-minifigure roster is the part that goes wrong in used listings. Castle minifigures are small, varied, and easily separated from the build. Used 10305 listings frequently arrive with one or two figures missing, and replacement on BrickLink for any individual named figure (King Mathias, Princess Storm, etc) runs £8 to £25 each. The baby dragon is a moulded part that gets misplaced. The hinge plates that drive the foldout mechanism wear with repeat use, so a sealed copy gives you fresh hinges that have never been folded.
For the 21363, the 13-figure roster is similarly the value-carrier. Sloth and One-Eyed Willie are unique to this set and the Sloth figure has unique torso printing that does not appear in any other LEGO release. Used listings can arrive without those figures and replacement on the secondary market is harder than it should be because the set is still being made and standalone-figure aftermarket has not fully formed yet.
This is what BuyMyBricks does. We hold sealed verified copies, inspected for original factory seals and intact tape on every flap before listing. If a box fails any of those checks on arrival at our Yorkshire warehouse, it does not get listed. 10305 sealed at £440. 21363 sealed at £322.99.
Where to buy these sealed in the UK
- BuyMyBricks. Both sets sealed and verified, despatched from our Yorkshire warehouse with tracked UK shipping in 1 to 2 working days, 30-day returns. UK-registered specialist, not a marketplace seller.
- eBay UK, BrickLink, and Amazon UK. All three carry both sets. Factory-seal verification, returns policy, and seller accountability vary. Unverified sealed listings carry the risk of missing figures or opened boxes.
- LEGO Shop direct. The 21363 is still available direct from LEGO as it remains in production. The 10305 is no longer available direct from LEGO.
For a UK buyer in 2026, BuyMyBricks is the obvious place to start for both sets. Sealed, verified, tracked UK delivery, and 30-day returns. 10305 at BuyMyBricks and 21363 at BuyMyBricks.
What other builders make of the 10305 and the 21363
Don’t just take our word for it
For the 10305, the consensus across Brickset (4.7 of 5 from 623 ratings) and Reddit r/lego is that the foldable hinge construction, the 22-figure density, and the deliberate 1984 Castle 6080 callback together place this in the top tier of Castle System sets ever made. The honest criticisms are that the back of the castle is sparsely furnished compared with the front, the foldout mechanism stresses hinge plates with repeat use, and the open-foldout footprint of around 80 cm needs more shelf depth than most owners expect.
For the 21363, the consensus is forming around 4.4 of 5 on a smaller rating sample (31 reviews at time of writing). Reviewers single out the 13-figure roster, the pirate-ship reveal mechanism, and the faithful film callouts. The criticisms are that the build is a single-vignette display rather than a multi-scene diorama (no playable interior depth), the price-per-piece sits higher than the Castle, and as a sealed display the figure-pack value is concentrated in the minifigures rather than the model itself.
Neither criticism set is a deal-breaker. They are buyer expectations a guide should set straight before you open the box.
