What sealed actually means here

“Sealed” gets used loosely on the internet. Box still in shrinkwrap? Sealed. Box been resealed by a reseller? Sealed. Box has had the factory seals replaced with new tape? Sealed. Box opened, contents verified, and re-sealed? Also sometimes called sealed. None of those pass our checks.

When we list a set as sealed, we mean:

  • Original factory seals intact on all flaps. LEGO applies clear adhesive stickers across every box flap during manufacturing. Those stickers have a specific appearance — distinct adhesive, shape, and position. We check each flap individually.
  • No replacement tape. Resellers occasionally strip damaged factory seals and replace them with generic tape. We reject these outright.
  • No signs of opening and re-sealing. Even careful resealing leaves subtle marks around the flap edges or under the sticker. These boxes don’t get listed.
  • Set number verified against the LEGO database. The set number printed on the box must match the set we’re selling. Sounds obvious but swaps happen.

A set that fails any of these checks either goes back to the supplier or gets listed separately as “opened” or “damaged box” with full disclosure.

Why sealed matters (and when it doesn’t)

If you’re buying retired LEGO to build, sealed matters because:

  • All pieces are guaranteed present — no missing bags, no missing minifigures
  • Stickers are in pristine condition (stickers yellow and lose adhesion over time in opened boxes)
  • Instruction manuals are unfolded and crease-free
  • The build experience is exactly what LEGO designed

If you’re buying to display the sealed box as an art piece, sealed condition is the entire point.

If you’re buying a set you intend to open and build immediately and don’t care about the box afterwards, an opened-but-complete set from a reputable source can save you money. We’re not here to sell sealed to everyone — just to be clear about what sealed means when we say it.

What we carry sealed

How to spot a resealed or counterfeit LEGO box (our checklist)

Since we do this daily, here’s what we look for — useful if you’re buying sealed LEGO from a marketplace seller:

  • Factory seal stickers: genuine LEGO seals have a specific sheen and the LEGO logo faintly visible. Replacements are always smoother and lack the logo.
  • Box edges: creases near the flaps suggest the box was opened. Genuine unopened boxes have crisp, sharp flap creases.
  • Print quality on the box: counterfeits often have slightly faded or misaligned printing. Compare against the official LEGO.com product photo.
  • Weight: a complete LEGO set has a predictable weight. BrickEconomy lists official weights. Significant deviation is a warning sign.
  • Inner plastic bag numbering: legitimate boxes have numbered bags 1, 2, 3 etc. Counterfeits sometimes have unnumbered bags or wrong number sequences.

Frequently asked questions

Is every BuyMyBricks set really sealed?

Every set listed as sealed has passed our inspection. If a box fails our checks on arrival it doesn’t get listed as sealed — we either return it to the supplier or list it separately as opened with full disclosure.

What happens if a sealed set arrives looking resealed?

Send it back. We cover the return postage and refund in full. That hasn’t happened often but when it does we take responsibility.

Do you inspect the contents or just the box?

We inspect the external seals and box condition only — we don’t open sets to check contents, that would break the sealed guarantee. We rely on box weight and set-number verification plus supplier trust.

Why does sealed LEGO cost more than opened?

Because sealed sets are a smaller and shrinking pool. Every box that gets opened reduces the sealed inventory available. On retired sets that pool has a fixed ceiling.

Are all sealed LEGO sets on BuyMyBricks retired?

Yes, we only sell retired. For sets still in production LEGO.com or an authorised retailer is the right place. We focus on the supply LEGO has stopped making.
