Specialist LEGO Buyer or General Dealer? at BuyMyBricks

Specialist LEGO Buyer or General Dealer?

Short answer

A specialist prices set by set because they know what each one sells for, so the unremarkable-looking box that happens to be worth a lot gets picked up. A general dealer cannot know that, so they price defensively across the whole pile. A general dealer is genuinely better when your LEGO is part of a wider clearance you want gone in one van.

Key takeaways
  • A specialist prices per set. A general dealer prices per pile.
  • Defensive pricing is rational when you do not know the category, and it costs you.
  • A general dealer wins when the LEGO is mixed in with everything else you want cleared.
  • The question that reveals which you are dealing with: will you price from a list?
  • Neither is dishonest. They are different businesses with different knowledge.

Both will take your collection. They will arrive at very different numbers and the reason is knowledge, not character. Understanding it helps you pick.

What the specialist knows

Somebody who deals only in sealed retired LEGO knows which sets move, which sit, and roughly what each is currently selling for. That is not a talent, it is just what you learn from handling nothing else.

  • They can price the awkward middle of a collection, not just the headline boxes.
  • They recognise the plain-looking box that is worth more than the ten around it.
  • They can usually give you a figure from a list, before anybody travels.
  • They will want the whole lot rather than picking out four sets.

Why a general dealer prices differently

A house clearance firm or general second-hand dealer buys whatever is in front of them. They cannot know that one box is a quiet outlier, so they cannot afford to assume it is. They price the pile at a level that works even if most of it is ordinary.

That is the correct decision for their business. It just means the upside in your collection, the part that makes it worth more than an average pile of boxes, is not something they can pay you for.

Side by side

Specialist General dealer
How it is priced Set by set Across the pile
The unusual set Recognised and paid for Priced like the rest
Takes the whole lot Usually yes Usually yes
Takes your non-LEGO items No Often yes, and that is the real advantage
Price from a list first Should be able to Usually wants to see it
Opened sets and loose bricks Generally not Often yes

When a general dealer is the better choice

In those cases a general dealer is genuinely solving your problem and a specialist is not, because we would take the sealed boxes and leave you with everything else.

  • You are clearing a whole house and the LEGO is one part of it.
  • The collection is mostly opened sets, built models or loose bricks.
  • Speed matters more than price and you want one van, once.
  • You would rather have one conversation than three.

The question that sorts it

Ask whether they will price it from a list before anybody travels, and whether that price then stands. A specialist can do the first because they know the prices, and should do the second because the figure was built on real numbers. If a buyer will not price until they are stood in your house, the figure you eventually get is a negotiating position rather than a valuation.

Where we sit

We are the specialist end. We buy sealed unopened sets, price them individually from your list, give one figure for the whole lot, collect at our cost and pay by bank transfer on the day. We do not buy opened sets, built models or loose bricks by weight, and we do not take non-LEGO items. If your situation is a whole-house clearance, a general dealer will serve you better and we will say so.

If you have LEGO and other collectables together

This is common, and it is where people most often accept a poor figure for the LEGO without noticing. One buyer taking everything is convenient, but the LEGO is usually the part being priced least accurately.

  1. Get the sealed LEGO priced on its own, by somebody who deals in it, before anybody quotes for the whole house.
  2. Then get the general clearance quote separately.
  3. Compare the two added together against a single all-in figure. The split is often worth meaningfully more.
  4. If the convenience of one van is worth the difference to you, take it. At least you chose knowingly.

Get the specialist figure

Send a list of set numbers and rough quantities. Priced set by set, one figure for the lot, usually the same day. Compare it with anything else you have been offered.
